Kolkata, May 5: In the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has solidified its hold on the significant Madhyamgram constituency in North 24 Parganas district. TMC candidate Rathin Ghosh emerged victorious, defeating BJP’s Anindya Banerjee by a margin of 2,399 votes.
Ghosh received 95,995 votes, while Banerjee garnered 93,596 votes. The constituency recorded an impressive voter turnout of 94.62%, significantly higher compared to previous elections. The overall voter turnout in North 24 Parganas district averaged at 92.92%.
Madhyamgram is part of the Kolkata Metropolitan area and falls under the Barasat Lok Sabha constituency. Since its formation in 2011 following the 2008 delimitation, TMC has maintained a dominant presence in this seat. Rathin Ghosh has secured substantial victories in both the 2016 and 2021 elections, having previously defeated a BJP candidate in 2021.
The 68-year-old Ghosh, who has completed 12th grade, has no criminal cases against him and holds assets worth approximately ₹57.9 lakh. He has won this seat three consecutive times. In contrast, BJP’s Anindya Banerjee, aged 57 and also a 12th-grade graduate, faces 12 criminal cases and has declared assets of ₹3.3 crore.
The BJP has posed a strong challenge this time by fielding Banerjee. Congress candidate Anant Ray, 72, is a graduate professional with no criminal cases against him and assets worth around ₹41.6 lakh.
Madhyamgram features a blend of urban and rural areas, with the Muslim community representing the largest voting bloc at approximately 27.60%, followed by Scheduled Caste voters at about 12.78%. This social dynamic makes electoral contests in the region particularly engaging.
The TMC’s robust local organization and welfare schemes continue to benefit the party, although the BJP has been steadily increasing its vote share in recent years, making the competition more intense than before. The Congress party’s position remains weak.
