Ahmedabad, September 23 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Ahmedabad city crime branch in Gujarat apprehended three individuals on Wednesday, seizing 1.051 kilograms of ambergris valued at approximately ₹1.05 crore. Ambergris, a substance derived from sperm whales, was allegedly being transported for sale in the Naroda area, according to police officials.
The arrests were made following a tip-off that alerted the crime branch about the suspects’ intent to sell and transport the whale byproduct. This operation is part of ‘Operation Thunder-2026’, a global initiative aimed at combating wildlife and forest-related crimes, as well as the illegal trade of flora and fauna.
In response to the information received, the crime branch team intercepted the three suspects and recovered the ambergris. The arrested individuals have been identified as Maheshbhai Rathod (46) from Lilalanagar, Khodiyar Nagar in Ahmedabad, Kiran alias Bhrubhai Bharwad (25) from Rohini village near the bus stand in Kheda district, and Karan Dininath God (27), also from Lilalanagar.
Authorities stated that the suspects were allegedly involved in the sale and transportation of ambergris. The seized material has been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding its possession, transport, and intended sale.
This action reflects ongoing efforts to protect terrestrial and marine wildlife and to combat illegal wildlife trade and transportation. The crime branch confirmed that investigations into the case and the activities of the arrested individuals will continue.
