The much-anticipated meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump ended in a heated exchange in the Oval Office, leading to the cancellation of a joint press conference. The dispute revolved around U.S. involvement in peace negotiations with Russia, highlighting strained diplomatic relations between the two leaders.

Zelenskyy’s Message After Confrontation
Following the intense meeting, Zelenskyy took to X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude while subtly criticizing the situation.
“Thank you, America. Thank you for your support. Thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that,” Zelenskyy posted.
His message came hours after the meeting collapsed, with tensions flaring over military aid, peace negotiations, and U.S. support for Ukraine.
Oval Office Showdown: “Just Say Thank You”
During the meeting, Vice President JD Vance directly confronted Zelenskyy, questioning his gratitude toward U.S. support.
“Have you said thank you once?” Vance asked.
He criticized Zelenskyy for attempting to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and diplomatic efforts with Russia in front of the American media.
“I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media,” Vance added.
Trump also joined in, asserting that Ukraine’s survival depended on U.S. military aid.
“If you didn’t have our military equipment, this war would have been over in two weeks,” Trump stated.
Vance, doubling down, bluntly told Zelenskyy to express more gratitude, saying, “Just say thank you.”
Zelenskyy firmly responded, “I said it a lot of times—thank you to the American people.”
Trump: “Zelenskyy Is Not Ready for Peace”
Following the tense meeting, Trump took to Truth Social, accusing Zelenskyy of disrespecting the U.S. and claiming that the Ukrainian president was not serious about peace.
“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage—I want PEACE.”
Trump reiterated his stance that Ukraine must negotiate with Russia without expecting unconditional U.S. support.
“You are either going to make a deal, or we’re out. And if we are out, you will fight it out. I don’t think it’s going to be pretty,” Trump warned.
Press Conference Canceled After Heated Exchange
The meeting, initially intended to finalize a U.S.-Ukraine agreement on rare-earth mineral extraction, quickly unraveled. White House officials, media representatives, and Ukrainian delegates witnessed the intense exchange between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Vance.
As a result, the planned joint press conference at 1 PM was abruptly canceled. Zelenskyy left the West Wing after two hours and 20 minutes, with no agreement finalized.
Zelenskyy Open to Mending Relations with Trump
Despite the public fallout, Zelenskyy later told Fox News that he remained open to mending ties with Trump.
“Of course,” he responded when asked if rebuilding relations with the former president was possible.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s relationship with the U.S. extends beyond individual leaders, reiterating the country’s reliance on American support against Russian aggression.
“It will be difficult without your support,” he stated, acknowledging Ukraine’s military disadvantage against Russia.
A Diplomatic Setback with Global Implications
The Oval Office confrontation highlights growing tensions between Ukraine and the U.S. under Trump’s administration. With Ukraine heavily reliant on Western aid, Trump’s firm stance on conditional support may significantly impact Ukraine’s military strategy and diplomatic efforts.
As global attention remains on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this high-profile fallout raises questions about the future of U.S. involvement in the conflict and Ukraine’s path toward peace.
