Successful Surgery for Mandible Fracture and Benign Bone Tumor at PIMS Udaipur

Bone Tumor

Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umarda, have successfully performed surgery on a patient with a mandible fracture and a benign bone tumor.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal shared that on July 12, a patient named Maheshchandra approached the dental department at PIMS Hospital, Umarda, after suffering a facial injury in a road accident in Banswara district about 12-15 days earlier. The patient had sought treatment in various hospitals in Banswara, Sagwara, Udaipur, and Jaipur but had not received any satisfactory treatment. The patient’s relatives had earlier consulted Dr. Ajit Joshi (MDS – Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon), Professor, and Head of the Dental Department at PIMS, to inquire if the surgery could be performed at the hospital.

Dr. Ajit Joshi asked the patient to report to the department with all relevant documents. Upon thorough examination, it was discovered that the patient had a rare bone disease known as fibrous dysplasia (benign tumor). This condition occurs due to a genetic imbalance, where the solid parts inside the bone are replaced by fibrous tissues. Although it is caused by genetic factors, there has been no reported evidence of it being hereditary. In this condition, the bone grows abnormally in shape and size and can continue to grow throughout life. The patient had undergone a surgical procedure about 5-6 years ago to reduce the size of the cheekbone (zygomatic bone), but it had grown back to its current size.

The patient had a fracture in the mandible (lower jaw) in the left parasymphyseal area, along with some other minor injuries, where the face was already affected by fibrous dysplasia (bony swelling/tumor). This benign tumor made the situation more challenging and complicated to operate on successfully. Despite this complexity, the patient was admitted and successfully underwent surgery free of charge under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Dr. Ajit Joshi and his team performed the surgery on July 15, and the patient was discharged on July 25. The patient is now on regular follow-up visits at the dental department of PIMS Umarda for further management as needed.
