Spain Clinches FIFA World Cup 2026 Title with Extra-Time Victory

New Jersey, July 20: Spain secured the FIFA World Cup 2026 title late Sunday night (Indian time), defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final match. Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero for Spain, scoring the decisive goal in extra time and bringing home the trophy for the second time since 2010.

After a tense 90 minutes without any goals at the New York New Jersey Stadium, Torres finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute. The forward controlled a header from Nico Williams and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that left Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez helpless. With this victory, ‘La Roja’ triumphed over the reigning champions Argentina.

Spain maintained possession for long stretches and created better chances throughout the final, but Argentina’s goalkeeper Martinez was in superb form, repeatedly thwarting Spanish attacks. Meanwhile, Argentina struggled to create clear opportunities, with captain Lionel Messi largely contained by Spain’s disciplined defense.

The reigning champions faced a significant setback during stoppage time of normal time when midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card, leaving Argentina with just 10 players for extra time.

Torres scored the match’s only goal in the 106th minute. Spain continued to apply pressure, and although they thought they had doubled their lead in extra time, that effort was ruled out due to a foul before the goal. Nevertheless, coach Luis de la Fuente’s team maintained their composure, easily managing the final moments of the match and ending Argentina’s reign as world champions.

This victory marked a spectacular conclusion to a remarkable tournament for Spain, who remained unbeaten throughout and claimed their second World Cup title after their historic success in 2010. Argentina, who won the title four years ago in Qatar, fell just short this time, with ‘Messi and company’ coming close but unable to secure the championship.
