Due to the approaching Tropical Storm Helene, SpaceX has postponed its upcoming mission dubbed Crew-9 to the International Space Station (ISS). Originally scheduled for September 26th launch from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, the company has ordered at least a two-day delay of the launch. Helene is supposed to intensify into a Category 3 hurricane and possibly make landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast. With this, NASA and SpaceX are targeting for a new launch window on Saturday, 28 September, at 1:17 p.m. EDT (1717 GMT), weather permitting.
Safety Precautions in Place
Although the storm will, in fact pass over Florida’s panhandle, its widespread reach has brought a cautionary warning from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration about strong winds and heavy rain on the eastern coast where Cape Canaveral lies. The emphasis there was on preparations made, such as precautionary return of the rocket-capsule combo back into the hangar. The hardware moved on 24 September, and mission rehearsals were continued ahead of an adjusted launch date.
Mission Details Crew-9 – The NASA astronaut Nick Hague will travel to the ISS aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. They will spend approximately five months in orbit on the ISS before returning to Earth in February 2025. This mission’s Crew Dragon capsule is known as Freedom, and four astronauts will be on board, though there is no one assigned to this mission. Two seats on this flight, however, are pre-reserved for Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who will be returning from the ISS after reaching Earth in June aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule.
After rescheduling, this will be SpaceX’s ninth operational astronaut mission as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. Boeing is also a part of this program but has still been facing delay in its crewed missions with its Starliner capsule.
