Head lice is a common problem that can disrupt daily life once it occurs. The lice cause itching and small wounds on the scalp, which can make a person irritable. Ayurveda suggests that lice problems start when the scalp accumulates dirt and excessive sweat. Certain natural remedies can help eliminate this problem at its root.
The most effective treatment to combat lice and related issues is a mixture of coconut oil and neem seeds. In Ayurveda, neem is known as an anti-parasitic agent that kills insects and parasites. The bitter compounds in neem seeds act like poison to lice. Coconut oil nourishes the scalp and penetrates deep into hair roots, blocking the lice’s breathing channels.
When coconut oil is gently heated and neem seeds are added and left for a few days, the medicinal properties of neem dissolve completely into the oil. Applying this oil weakens the outer layer of lice. Lice depend on tiny pores for breathing, and the oil blocks these pores, gradually killing the lice.
The bitterness of neem seeds also affects the nits, causing them to loosen from hair and preventing new lice from developing. Scientifically, the antibacterial and antifungal properties in neem reduce infections on the scalp. Regular use of this remedy can completely eliminate lice within four to five weeks.
Another helpful remedy is a blend of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and camphor. In Ayurveda, camphor is considered cooling, antiseptic, and soothing for itching. The strong fragrance and warming nature of camphor are harmful to lice. Petroleum jelly is a thick substance that traps lice in the hair and restricts their movement. When applied together on the scalp, this mixture covers the lice’s bodies, cutting off their oxygen supply, which causes them to die quickly.
Petroleum jelly blocks the lice’s respiratory system, while camphor affects their nervous system. Camphor’s scent also helps drive lice away from the scalp. After applying this treatment, washing and combing the hair easily removes dead lice and nits. Additionally, camphor reduces itching and dandruff, providing relief to the scalp.
