Sikkim CM Promotes Fuel Conservation Through Walking Initiative

Gangtok, May 18: In a move to promote fuel savings, reduce unnecessary expenditures, and encourage responsible governance, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang walked approximately 14 minutes from his official residence, Mintokgang, to the Manan Center for a government event on Monday.

This initiative coincides with the state government’s formal implementation of new measures related to fuel conservation. It is seen as aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for disciplined administration, efficient use of public resources, and economic prudence.

According to a statement, the Chief Minister chose to walk instead of using an official convoy to convey that the initiative for fuel savings should begin with leadership and personal conduct, rather than being limited to administrative directives.

The statement also noted that the Chief Minister had previously walked to the ‘Sikkim Artist Trust Conference,’ engaging with people along the way. The government has described this not merely as a symbolic gesture but as an inspiring message for the public.

As part of the fuel conservation efforts, the state government has decided to reduce the Chief Minister’s motorcade by 50 percent. Additionally, an odd-even system will be implemented for government and private vehicles, although taxis and emergency services will be exempt.

On May 14, the Home Department issued a notification regarding these measures. All government departments, autonomous bodies, public enterprises, and state institutions have been directed to ensure better use of government resources and reduce fuel consumption.

Officials and employees have been advised to use public transport whenever possible, avoid unnecessary vehicle use, and prioritize virtual meetings. Walking to nearby meetings and events has also been encouraged.

The state government asserts that these steps aim to enhance accountability, discipline, and better resource utilization within the administration.
