New Delhi, 1 January. The tension between Russia and Ukraine continues unabated as the new year begins. Recently, Russia claimed that Ukraine attacked President Vladimir Putin’s residence. In response, Ukraine has accused Russia of carrying out more than 200 drone attacks on New Year’s Eve. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared images to support his claims.
On the social media platform X, President Zelensky posted four photographs and a video, stating, “Russia deliberately brought war into the new year, launching over two hundred drones against Ukraine overnight. Most of these were shot down, and I thank all our warriors who thwarted this attack.”
Zelensky further explained that the attacks targeted the regions of Volyn, Rivne, Zaporizhzhia, Odessa, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv. The primary target was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Wherever necessary, rescue teams are providing assistance, and power engineers are restoring electricity following the attacks. He expressed gratitude to everyone involved in managing the aftermath of the attacks.
He added on X, “Killings must stop; there can be no obstacle in protecting human lives. If attacks continue even during the New Year holidays, air defence supplies cannot be delayed. Our comrades are running low on essential equipment. We hope that the security arrangements agreed with the United States at the end of December will be delivered on time. I thank everyone standing with Ukraine and working for our security.”
In a brief New Year message, Putin called the soldiers involved in the conflict the nation’s heroes. This message was first broadcast from Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka region, according to a report by The Moscow Times.
Putin told his soldiers and commanders that the country trusts them and that victory will be theirs. This message came as Russia observed its main public holiday during a prolonged and costly conflict. Both sides have suffered heavy losses in this war. It is estimated that military casualties number in the thousands on both sides, while millions of Ukrainian civilians have been forced to leave their homes.
Putin’s New Year speech focused largely on the war. He made no mention of the allegations that Ukraine attempted a drone attack on his residence, which Ukraine has firmly denied. It is also noteworthy that on 31 December, Putin marked 26 years in power.
