Jaipur, May 17 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rainfall in nine districts of Rajasthan, including Kota, as changing weather patterns are expected to bring some relief from the scorching heat between May 17 and May 20.

Despite the forecast of rain, several regions in the state are still reeling under intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring beyond 45°C in parts of Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, and Churu.
⚠️ Thunderstorm and Rainfall Alert: May 17 to May 20
A yellow alert has been issued for:
Kota
Udaipur
Other districts in eastern and southern Rajasthan
Thunderstorms and dust storms are expected to begin post-afternoon hours, especially over the weekend. The Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions may also witness light showers and wind activity around May 19–20, offering a temporary respite from the extreme temperatures.
🌡️ Heatwave Continues in Northern Rajasthan
While some areas prepare for rainfall, districts in the north and northwest, including Sri Ganganagar, Churu, and Bikaner, remain under heatwave alerts:
Sri Ganganagar: 45.9°C
Churu: 45.6°C
Bikaner: 45.2°C
Jaisalmer: 44.6°C
Barmer: 44.4°C
Kota: 43.8°C
Jaipur: 43.0°C
The intense heat led to deserted roads in Rajsamand’s Amet town, while in Jaipur, municipal authorities deployed smog guns and water sprinklers at major intersections to cool down public areas.
🏙️ Jaipur’s Response to Rising Heat
In response to the growing heat stress:
Water sprinkling operations have begun at key traffic junctions
Green shade covers have been installed at traffic signals to provide temporary relief to commuters
Night temperatures have also increased, with Jaipur recording a minimum of 30.6°C last night
🌬️ Dust Storm Risk in Northern Districts
According to the IMD, Jhunjhunu, Churu, Hanumangarh, and Sri Ganganagar may experience dust-laden strong winds during the daytime. These conditions may reduce visibility and pose health risks for vulnerable groups.
🗓️ Outlook Ahead
17–20 May: Thunderstorms, dust storms, and isolated rainfall in eastern and southern Rajasthan
19–20 May: Partial weather changes in Jaipur and Bharatpur
Ongoing: Heatwave to persist in northern regions despite minor fluctuations
