Ranchi, March 21 – A sudden spell of heavy rain coupled with strong winds swept across Ranchi and several other districts in Jharkhand on Friday, causing a significant drop in temperatures and signaling the brief return of winter-like conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that temperatures in Ranchi plunged from 34°C to 24°C—a sharp 10-degree drop within a matter of hours.

Cold Spell Returns as Rain Lashes Several Districts
Unseasonal weather patterns gripped the state, with torrential rains and gusty winds catching residents off guard. Ranchi, along with adjoining districts like Khunti, Simdega, and Hazaribagh, experienced intense rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas. The IMD confirmed that the stormy conditions were due to an active western disturbance, which triggered widespread precipitation.
Residents were seen pulling out warm clothes again, as the sudden drop in temperature brought back the chill. While the downpour offered some relief from the early onset of summer, it also disrupted daily life—schools and offices reported lower attendance, and traffic moved at a slower pace due to slick roads and reduced visibility.
IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts for March 22-23
The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for several districts on March 22, predicting thunderstorm activity, hailstorms, and wind speeds ranging from 40-50 km/h. Affected regions include East and West Singhbhum, Simdega, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, and northeastern areas such as Deoghar, Dhanbad, and Dumka.
For March 23, a Yellow Alert has been declared for southeastern and northeastern zones, cautioning residents about potential thunderstorms and winds between 30-40 km/h. People are advised to stay indoors during peak storm hours, secure loose items around homes, and remain vigilant for weather updates.
Seasonal Uncertainty Keeps Locals on Edge
Jharkhand’s residents are now bracing for more weather fluctuations. This dramatic shift has not only affected lifestyle routines but also raised concerns among farmers preparing for seasonal crop sowing. The unseasonal rain, while beneficial for some crops, may damage others if the erratic patterns persist.
Local authorities have urged citizens to stay cautious, especially during travel, and to follow all safety advisories issued by the weather department.
