Liverpool, October 20 (Udaipur Kiran): Manchester United stunned Liverpool 2–1 at Anfield on Sunday night, handing the home side their fourth consecutive defeat — their worst run in 11 years. A late header from Harry Maguire in the 84th minute gave United a dramatic victory and their second straight Premier League win under manager Rúben Amorim.

The match began disastrously for Liverpool as Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead inside the first minute, slotting home from Amad Diallo’s assist after beating defender Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool struggled to find rhythm in the opening half, with Mohamed Salah missing a crucial opportunity and Cody Gakpo failing to convert a sitter from close range.
United, on the other hand, could have doubled their lead before halftime, but Bruno Fernandes’ powerful strike went narrowly wide, while goalkeeper Sanne Lemmens made a key save from Alexander Isak’s shot to keep United ahead.
Liverpool equalised in the 78th minute when Federico Chiesa’s low cross found Gakpo, who finished neatly from close range. However, parity lasted just six minutes. In the 84th minute, Maguire, left unmarked by Liverpool’s defence, rose high to head in Fernandes’ looping cross, restoring United’s lead.
Gakpo had one final chance to equalise deep into stoppage time from Jeremie Frimpong’s cross but failed to convert. The defeat marked Liverpool’s first Premier League loss at Anfield in over a year, dealing a major blow to their title hopes.
Liverpool, under coach Arne Slot, have now fallen four points behind league leaders Arsenal. Despite spending nearly £450 million in the transfer market, Slot’s side has struggled to find form this season, especially following key squad changes and the emotional blow of Diogo Jota’s death in a car accident in July.
Manchester United, meanwhile, moved up to ninth place, just two points behind their long-time rivals, easing the pressure on Amorim. The win also ended United’s nine-year winless streak at Anfield — their first victory there since January 2016.
