India Defeats Australia in Hockey for the First Time Since 1972

Paris, August 2 (Udaipur Kiran) – The Indian men’s hockey team secured a historic victory at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on Friday, defeating Australia 3-2 in a Pool B match of the ongoing Paris Olympics. This win marks India’s first triumph over Australia in the Olympics since the 1972 Munich Games.

India’s performance was a significant comeback following their previous game, where they lost 1-2 to defending champions Belgium. The Indian team started strong, with Abhishek (12′) and captain Harmanpreet Singh (13′) scoring two goals within two minutes in the first quarter, giving India a 2-0 lead. Thomas Craig (25′) scored from a penalty corner to bring Australia back into the game.

In the 32nd minute, Harmanpreet Singh scored his second goal, extending India’s lead to 3-1. Blake Govers scored for Australia in the 55th minute, bringing the score to 3-2, which remained until the end of the match.

India dominated ball possession with 54%, but Australia made 37 circle entries, significantly more than India’s 17 chances. With this win, India now stands second in Pool B with three wins, two draws, and one loss, overtaking Australia, which is third with three wins and two losses.
