Nihal Wadhera to Play for Himachal Pradesh in Upcoming Domestic Season
Mumbai, July 16: In a significant development ahead of the upcoming domestic cricket season, Punjab has suffered a major blow as left-handed batsman Nihal Wadhera has decided to leave the Punjab team to play for Himachal Pradesh. Wadhera’s presence is expected to strengthen Himachal Pradesh’s batting lineup, while his departure leaves Punjab’s batting weakened.
According to a report by ESPN, Wadhera made this decision due to limited opportunities in the Punjab team. He becomes the third player from Punjab to join Himachal Pradesh, following Pukhraj Mann and Aryaman Singh. Last season, Wadhera did not get consistent playing time with Punjab, participating in only three Ranji Trophy matches, two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches, and four Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches.
Nihal Wadhera is regarded as one of the promising young batsmen in domestic cricket. He first gained attention during the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season when he scored a remarkable century on his debut against Gujarat. He continued to showcase his talent and was part of the Punjab team that won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2023-24 season.
So far, Wadhera has played 17 first-class matches, 16 List A matches, and 69 T20 matches. Additionally, he has represented the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), gaining valuable experience at a higher level.
Ahead of the new season, the Himachal Pradesh cricket team has also made changes to its support staff, appointing Vineet Saxena as the head coach in place of VRV Singh and Gagandeep Singh as the bowling coach. Former Himachal batsman Prashant Chopra has also returned to his home state after leaving Uttarakhand.
Last season, the Himachal Pradesh team failed to reach the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Their Ranji Trophy campaign ended with two losses and five draws. Therefore, Wadhera’s inclusion raises the prospects for better performance for Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming season.
