Morne Morkel Gives Update on Gill and Iyer’s Recovery

New Delhi, November 29 (Udaipur Kiran): Indian team’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has shared an update on the recovery of captain Shubman Gill and batter Shreyas Iyer. Both players are currently recovering from their respective injuries and are awaiting their return to the team.

Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury during the Kolkata Test against South Africa, while Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the Australia tour last month due to a spleen injury.

Speaking about Gill’s condition, Morkel said, “I think it is best that the medical team gives the detailed update. I spoke to Shubman two days ago to check on him. He is recovering well, which is good to hear.”

On Shreyas Iyer’s progress, Morkel said, “Shreyas has also started his rehabilitation, which is very encouraging. We are waiting for his return to the team. He is healthy and has begun preparing for his comeback.”

For the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to be considered as Gill’s replacement. However, there is still no clarity on who will bat at the number four position. Rishabh Pant and Tilak Varma are among the contenders for the role.

Morkel also said that the shift to the white-ball format will help the team regain its focus. “You know the South African team, they have momentum and are a confident side, which makes them dangerous. Getting a good start will be very important for us. Over the next one or two weeks, we need to play good cricket because they have come here to win. We will focus on the next two days, give ourselves the best chance to prepare well, move past the last few weeks and concentrate on playing strong cricket on the field,” he said.

India recently lost the Test series against South Africa 0–2. The team will now look to bounce back in the limited-overs series.

India and South Africa will play a three-match ODI series from November 30 to December 6. After that, both teams will face each other in a five-match T20 series.
