City, February 11: Mercedes’ impressive performance during the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 pre-season has raised eyebrows, particularly after team member Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed a full race simulation on just the second day of testing in Barcelona. Williams team principal James Vowles described this achievement as a “laugh in everyone’s face,” highlighting the significant gap between Mercedes and its rivals.
The Mercedes W17, powered by its HPP unit, demonstrated remarkable reliability, a feat mirrored by customer teams McLaren and Alpine. Vowles expressed admiration for Mercedes’ swift progress, acknowledging his past association with the team.
George Russell, another key driver for Mercedes, shared his enthusiasm about the car’s performance, noting that the data from the track matched their simulator predictions. However, he cautioned against underestimating competitors like Red Bull and Ferrari, who also showed strong performances during the tests.
Vowles praised Red Bull Ford Powertrains for their impressive first-year power unit, which has proven competitive on the track. Despite Williams missing the initial shakedown due to production delays, the team is optimistic about catching up in the upcoming tests, having conducted virtual testing and filming days to prepare.
As the pre-season progresses, the competition remains fierce, with teams eager to prove their capabilities ahead of the new season.
