New Delhi, June 10: Following the recent assembly elections in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress (TMC) faced a setback, party leader and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is currently on a visit to Delhi. This marks her first trip to the capital since the election results were announced.
During her visit, Mamata Banerjee met with Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, at her residence on 10 Janpath. The two leaders engaged in discussions for nearly an hour. Notably, this meeting is the second between them in just 24 hours, as they had previously interacted during the meeting of the India Alliance, where a warm exchange was noted, including a hug between the two leaders.
Mamata Banerjee’s visit comes at a time when the TMC is grappling with a significant political crisis. Following the assembly election defeat, discontent within the party has been rising. Reports of dissatisfaction among some legislators have emerged, and the announcement by several party MPs to support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has further complicated the leadership’s challenges.
During her Delhi trip, Mamata Banerjee first met with Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party and former Chief Minister of Delhi, before her crucial meeting with Sonia Gandhi, which is seen as significant for opposition politics.
Sources indicate that at the recent India Alliance meeting, Mamata raised questions regarding the Election Commission’s role during the West Bengal assembly elections. She urged opposition parties to remain united, emphasizing that opposition unity is essential for safeguarding democratic values in the future.
Historically, the relationship between the TMC and Congress has been tumultuous. Mamata Banerjee founded the TMC after breaking away from Congress in 1998. In 2011, both parties collaborated to oust the long-standing Left Front government. However, their relationship soured afterward, with many Congress leaders and legislators joining the TMC. Now, as the TMC’s position weakens in West Bengal, Congress sees an opportunity to regain its lost political ground in the state.
