Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express Gains Popularity with 45,000 Passengers in First 10 Days

New Delhi, May 12: The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express service has received an overwhelming response from passengers, according to the Ministry of Railways. Launched between Jammu and Kashmir, this modern train service has transported nearly 45,000 passengers in its first ten days of operation. The ministry states that this train is becoming a new lifeline for Jammu and Kashmir.

An official statement revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the historic 272-kilometer Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link on June 6, 2025. Subsequently, on April 30, 2026, Union Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the 20-coach Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. From May 2 to May 11, the four train services on this route carried a total of 44,727 passengers.

According to the Railway Ministry, 28,762 passengers traveled in the first week alone, indicating a rapid increase in demand for travel on the Jammu-Kashmir rail corridor. The trains, numbered 26401 and 26402, operate six days a week between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, while trains 26403 and 26404 run on all days except Wednesday. This means that passengers have four train services available for travel on most days.

The railway authorities noted that on several days, passenger numbers approached full capacity. On May 3, 4,977 passengers traveled, and this number rose to 5,657 by May 10. On Sundays, the average occupancy of the trains exceeded 98%, reflecting the growing popularity of this route.

Railway officials mentioned that while the initial eight-coach trains were fully booked, the 20-coach trains are also filling up quickly. This train service is not just a mode of transport but has brought significant changes to the economy and lives of people in Jammu and Kashmir. Now, pilgrims, students, traders, government employees, and tourists can travel comfortably without interruptions.

Tourists are now arriving in Kashmir via the Vande Bharat train, enjoying views of world-class railway bridges like Chenab and Anji. The train is specially designed to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, ensuring ease of travel even during snowfall and landslides.

The Railway Ministry further stated that the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat has emerged as the most economical travel option on this route. The chair car ticket includes meals and is significantly cheaper compared to air travel or taxi services.

While flight tickets can be expensive, the Vande Bharat train offers a comfortable and safe travel experience at a lower cost. Notably, even when highways are closed, the train service remains a reliable option for passengers.

The rail journey from Jammu to Srinagar is considered one of the most beautiful rail routes in the world, featuring high mountains, long tunnels, and stunning valleys of Kashmir, providing passengers with a memorable experience.

The Railway Ministry asserts that Indian Railways is keeping this special journey affordable for the general public by offering services at rates lower than operational costs. With the onset of summer, an increase in tourist numbers in Kashmir is anticipated. This train will prove to be a significant convenience for travelers heading to popular tourist destinations like Dal Lake, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg.

Passengers can now reach Srinagar from Jammu Tawi in less than five hours, and the number of travelers on this route is expected to rise rapidly in the coming months.
