Instagram, the popular photo and video-sharing platform owned by Meta, is testing a new feature aimed at ensuring users never miss updates from their friends and followers. Dubbed Story Highlights, this feature surfaces unseen Stories saved by mutual connections, offering users an opportunity to revisit missed content and strengthen personal connections.
Revisiting Missed Stories
Positioned at the end of the Stories tray at the top of the feed, the Story Highlights feature serves as a gentle reminder to catch up on updates that might have been overlooked. Unlike traditional Stories that disappear after 24 hours, Highlights provide a longer window for users to engage with curated moments from their network.
Meta confirmed the testing phase to TechCrunch, stating, “We’re always working on new ways to help people connect in Stories.” The feature is currently being rolled out to a small group of users as part of a broader effort to refine the Stories experience.
Spotlight on Personal Connections
Social media expert Ahmed Ghanem was the first to identify the new feature, sharing screenshots of the update on X (formerly Twitter). With Instagram increasingly dominated by Reels and sponsored posts, Story Highlights aim to refocus attention on personal content and foster meaningful engagement.
The feature activates only after users view all active Stories, encouraging them to explore overlooked moments without disrupting their feed flow.
Live Location Sharing for Real-Time Coordination
In addition to Story Highlights, Instagram is rolling out live location sharing, a feature designed for seamless coordination and safety. Available in select countries, this tool allows users to share their live location via direct messages (DMs) for up to one hour. The feature works exclusively in private 1:1 or group chats, with sharing turned off by default to prioritize user privacy. Notifications ensure users are aware whenever live location sharing is active.
