Udaipur, January 9 — A disturbing incident in Udaipur involving a Russian woman and her YouTuber husband has triggered widespread outrage online. Popular travel vlogger Mithilesh Backpacker, who was visiting the City Palace in Udaipur with his wife Lisa and their two-year-old son, encountered harassment from a local man, prompting an angry confrontation and a viral video documenting his response.
The Incident: Derogatory Remark Sparks Confrontation
Mithilesh was filming moments of his family’s visit when an off-camera voice made an inappropriate comment — “6,000 INR” — directed at Lisa. The phrase, often associated with distasteful jokes, was derogatory in the given context, prompting Mithilesh to immediately halt his recording and confront the harasser.
In the video shared on his YouTube channel, Mithilesh can be seen furiously confronting the man, demanding to know the intent behind the remark. “6,000 INR kisko bolta, merko samajhta nahi kya? (Don’t I understand whom you are referring to with 6,000 INR?),” Mithilesh questioned. The man, however, denied directing the comment toward his wife.
The situation escalated when Mithilesh threatened to call the police, but according to him, the palace security intervened and requested him not to involve law enforcement. Despite the denial, Mithilesh remained firm in his stance, expressing concern about his family’s safety during their visit to India.
YouTuber Expresses Disappointment with the Safety of Women in India
In his follow-up video, Mithilesh expressed his deep frustration and disappointment over the incident. “I brought my wife to India to showcase the beauty of the country and promote tourism. I wanted to show that India is safe, welcoming, and beautiful. But something like this happens, and it’s deeply shameful,” he remarked.
The YouTuber also raised broader concerns about women’s safety in India, highlighting how such incidents harm the country’s reputation as a tourist destination. “When something like this happens, what do I say to other foreign tourists? How can we call our country safe when women, especially foreign visitors, are subjected to harassment like this?” he asked.
A Recurrent Issue: Harassment of Foreign Tourists in India
Unfortunately, incidents of harassment targeting foreign tourists in India are not uncommon. Several cases in the past have drawn attention to the challenges faced by travelers, particularly women.
- December 2018, New Delhi: A Belgian tourist had to leave India within 24 hours after being harassed by individuals posing as police officers. Misguided by the men, she was convinced her hotel booking had been canceled and was directed to an unsafe and overpriced hotel.
- Jaipur Incident: A similar incident in Jaipur involved a foreign tourist being inappropriately touched by an auto driver. The video of the incident went viral, sparking widespread outrage and concern about the safety of women tourists in the city.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for stronger enforcement of laws and better public awareness to ensure the safety of visitors in India.
