In a major boost for education across Rajasthan, Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), a Vedanta Group company and India’s largest integrated zinc producer, has signed an MoU with the Department of Education, Rajasthan. The agreement, sealed during the Rising Rajasthan Education Pre-Summit in Jaipur, pledges an impressive ₹36 crore investment over five years to uplift educational standards and infrastructure across the state.
This initiative follows Vedanta Group’s recent announcement of a ₹1 lakh crore investment in Rajasthan. Through this new partnership, Hindustan Zinc aims to impact 72 government schools, benefiting over 2 lakh students annually and laying a stronger foundation for career readiness and holistic development. The MoU was signed by Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, alongside top state officials, underscoring the joint commitment to empowering Rajasthan’s youth.
Core Areas of Development under the Shiksha Sambal Initiative
Hindustan Zinc’s flagship educational program, Shiksha Sambal, focuses on three core pillars to address the diverse needs of students:
- Holistic Student Development: The initiative will support learning through trained teachers, customized teaching techniques, and seasonal camps for secondary students. In addition, government teachers will receive specialized training to foster academic success and build a strong foundation.
- Model Schools with Enhanced Facilities: Selected schools will undergo upgrades, transforming into model institutions with modern classrooms, improved sanitation facilities, advanced technology, and practical learning resources. These enhancements aim to create dynamic learning environments in alignment with contemporary educational standards.
- Career Counseling and Vocational Training: In line with National Education Policy 2020, the initiative will provide students with career guidance and vocational training, empowering them to pursue meaningful careers.
A Vision of Empowered Education and Sustainable Progress
Speaking on the initiative, Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Rajasthan, highlighted education as the foundation for growth, recognizing the pivotal role of initiatives like Shiksha Sambal in unlocking the potential of Rajasthan’s youth. “Rising Rajasthan has received tremendous support, and this investment by Hindustan Zinc showcases a commitment to our young generation,” he stated.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized the significance of the company’s dedication to education, saying, “At Hindustan Zinc, we are deeply committed to fostering education and empowerment as catalysts for change. This investment will elevate educational standards and contribute to the long-term progress of the community. We believe in empowering every child with quality education, meaningful career guidance, and life-enriching opportunities.”
A Legacy of Social Responsibility and Community Impact
For over a decade, Hindustan Zinc has been a driving force in education and community development in Rajasthan. Through initiatives like Shiksha Sambal, the company reaches over 2 lakh children annually in rural and underprivileged communities. In addition, Nand Ghars—Hindustan Zinc’s early childhood development centers—have provided educational support to over 2.5 lakh women and children across Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
The company’s broader impact includes Unchi Udaan, which aids aspiring IIT candidates from low-income backgrounds, and Jeevan Tarang, a program for children with disabilities. Hindustan Zinc also promotes sustainable livelihoods for rural women and farmers, healthcare access, water conservation, and sanitation, positively impacting over 2 million lives across 3,700 villages.
Global Recognition and Commitment to Sustainability
Hindustan Zinc’s dedication to sustainability is widely recognized. The company, which holds a 75% share of India’s primary zinc market and serves over 40 countries, has been named the world’s most sustainable company in metals and mining by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023. This accolade reflects Hindustan Zinc’s operational excellence, innovation, and leading ESG practices. The company is also Water Positive and committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
