Jaipur, November 6, 2024 – As a part of the grand Republic Day Celebrations 2025, the Special Sailing Expedition (SSE) titled “Bhartiya Nadiyaan, Sanskritiyon ki Janani” (Indian Rivers, the Cradles of Culture) is set to journey through India’s great rivers and coastlines. This flagship event, under the auspices of HQ Directorate General of National Cadet Corps (DNCC), commenced its second leg today with a ceremonial flag-off from Prayagraj. This momentous journey, graced by Maj Gen Jagdeep Singh Cheema, ADG Punjab Haryana Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh (PHHP&C) Directorate, is designed to honor the vitality of India’s rivers and their role in shaping our rich cultural heritage.
In a ceremony held at the Boat Club in Prayagraj, Maj Gen Rajesh Bhatt, GOC Purva UP & MP Sub Area, and Maj Gen Sunil Sheoran, Sena Medal, GOC 4 Div, joined Maj Gen Cheema in congratulating the cadets from the PHHP&C, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh directorates. In his address, Maj Gen Cheema emphasized the importance of river conservation and the challenges of sailing along the mighty River Ganga. “Our rivers are our lifelines, the carriers of culture and tradition,” he stated, urging the young cadets to champion the cause of water conservation as they navigate the sacred waters.
Journey from Kanpur to Kolkata: Sailing with the Spirit of Heritage
The SSE will cover the vast stretch of the Ganges, from Kanpur to Kolkata, propelled by wind and the undeterred spirit of the NCC cadets. This segment will touch historic cities, including Varanasi, Buxar, Patna, Farakka, and culminate in Kolkata on December 20, 2024. The current leg of the journey will reach Varanasi by November 11, with both male and female cadets participating in equal numbers to embody the inclusive spirit of the expedition.
In total, 17 directorates under the HQDGNCC will participate in both riverine and coastal segments, representing every region of the country. From the Uttar Pradesh Directorate, 72 cadets are sailing from Kanpur to Buxar alongside cadets and staff from seven other directorates, totaling 144 participants.
A Cultural Celebration of India’s Heritage
Before setting sail, cadets presented a vibrant cultural program that filled the air with the essence of India’s rivers and the diverse heritage they inspire. The soulful rendition of “O re Nadiya, O re Nadiya, tu kahaan se aayi re” by the NCC cadets from Uttar Pradesh struck a chord with the audience, paying tribute to the River Ganga and rivers across India. The performance captured the deep reverence Indians hold for their rivers.
The event also featured an electrifying Bhangra performance by cadets from the PHHP&C directorate, energizing the crowd with their powerful dance moves. A beautifully crafted semi-classical dance showcased the timeless elegance of India’s art forms, transcending regional and linguistic boundaries. Cadets from Rajasthan enthralled the gathering with the traditional Ghoomar dance, set against the scenic greens of the Boat Club, accompanied by a medley of Rajasthani folk songs that filled the audience with cheer.
A Tribute to the Spirit of India’s Youth and Rivers
As the boats launched from Prayagraj, they carried not only the young cadets but also the spirit of a country bound by rivers and traditions. The SSE represents a remarkable opportunity to celebrate India’s rivers as cradles of civilization, emphasizing their importance and the urgent need for conservation.
The Special Sailing Expedition will conclude with a grand ceremonial flag-in by the Honorable Prime Minister on January 28, 2025. This event stands as a testament to the resilience of India’s youth and their dedication to preserving the legacy of our rivers for future generations.
