Shimla, January 3 – Himachal Pradesh is gearing up for another spell of snowfall and rain, with the weather department forecasting adverse weather conditions from January 4 to 7. Popular hill stations like Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, and Dalhousie are likely to experience the season’s fourth snowfall, adding to the three snowfalls witnessed in December.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for January 5 and 6, warning of strong winds and lightning in several parts of the state. The Western Disturbance is expected to become active on January 4, leading to sudden weather changes. While the plains will experience rainfall, the higher altitudes are likely to be covered in snow, intensifying the cold wave across the state.
Snowfall Expected After a Busy December
Himachal Pradesh witnessed three significant snowfalls in December, drawing a large number of tourists. With the first snowfall of January expected this week, destinations such as Shimla, Kufri, and Narkanda are already buzzing with excitement. Improved Minimum Temperatures
- Over the past 24 hours, the state’s minimum temperature has risen by 2.8°C.
- The average minimum temperature remains 4.4°C above normal, offering slight relief during nights.
Tribal Regions Continue to Freeze
- In Lahaul-Spiti, temperatures remain sub-zero, disrupting daily life.
- Tabo recorded the lowest temperature at -5.5°C, followed by:
- Samdho: -2.9°C
- Kukumseri: -2.6°C
- Keylong: -0.2°C
Shimla Nights Warmer Than Plains
Shimla’s minimum temperature stood at 11.5°C, significantly higher than the plains of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Mandi, Una, and Kangra, where the chill continues to grip.
Clear Weather Expected on January 8 and 9
According to Shimla Meteorological Centre, the weather will clear up on January 8 and 9, bringing sunshine and temporary relief from the cold. However, before that, the upcoming rain and snow are likely to cause a dip in temperatures.
