Kerala Assembly Elections: 676 Candidates File Nominations

Thiruvananthapuram, March 23: A total of 676 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the 140 seats in the Kerala Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. The deadline for filing nominations was Monday at 5 PM.

The scrutiny of the submitted nomination papers will take place on Tuesday, marking a crucial step in determining the eligibility of the candidates. The process for withdrawing nominations will remain open until March 26, after which the final list of candidates will be published, providing a clear picture of the electoral contest in each constituency.

In several constituencies, major political fronts are facing challenges from rebel candidates, which poses a risk to carefully crafted electoral strategies. Leaders from all parties have intensified efforts to persuade these rebel candidates and those with similar names to withdraw their nominations before the deadline.

The success or failure of these negotiations is expected to bring significant changes to the election dynamics, especially in seats where close contests are anticipated, as even a slight difference in votes could alter the outcomes.

Political analysts believe that the presence of rebel candidates reflects underlying factional tensions within the parties, even as state-level leadership displays unity. In the coming days, intense behind-the-scenes negotiations are likely, with party leadership striving to balance discipline and harmony to mitigate electoral losses.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission is set to publish the final voter list for the state on Tuesday. Approximately 27.2 million voters in Kerala are prepared to exercise their franchise in this crucial election.

With just over two weeks left for campaigning, political parties are expected to accelerate their strategies to reach out to voters and strengthen their support base. The formal commencement of the decisive phase of campaigning will begin with the final announcement of candidates, as Kerala heads towards a significant electoral battle that will determine its political direction for the next five years.
