From Award Winner to Judge: Hemant Joshi’s Full-Circle Moment in Art

UDAIPUR, January 14: (Udaipur Kiran). Every art student carries a defining moment that shapes their creative journey. For Udaipur-based educator and sculptor Hemant Joshi, that moment came in 1994, when he received the prestigious Student Art Award from the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi. Three decades later, the same award brought him back to the same platform—this time as a member of the jury.

Hemant Joshi recently served as a judge at the 45th State-Level Student Art Exhibition organised by the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi, Jaipur. The exhibition is an annual platform that provides emerging student artists from across the state an opportunity to showcase their creativity and gain recognition.

According to the official communication issued by the Akademi, artworks were received from across Rajasthan, out of which 10 outstanding works were selected for awards, while around 100 artworks were chosen for display in the exhibition. The jury meeting was held at the Akademi’s Jaipur office, where selections were finalised after detailed deliberations.

For Joshi, the experience carried deep emotional significance. The very award that once strengthened his belief in art during his student days had now entrusted him with the responsibility of shaping its future.

Sharing his thoughts, Hemant Joshi said that being appointed as a judge for the same student art award that once defined his early artistic identity was a moment of immense pride and fulfilment. He described it not merely as an assignment, but as a sense of completion in his artistic journey, reflecting the continuity and purpose of sustained creative practice.

He also praised the selected student artists, noting that the younger generation’s work reflects strong sensitivity, experimentation and contemporary thought. According to him, today’s students are addressing social, cultural and human concerns through innovative forms and mediums, giving new energy to Rajasthan’s rich artistic tradition.

Hemant Joshi has been actively associated with art education, sculpture and creative practice for many years. He has participated in several national and state-level exhibitions, workshops and jury panels. His selection as a judge has brought pride not only to Udaipur but also to the wider Mewar region.

The Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi’s student art exhibition continues to be a significant platform for young artists, often becoming the starting point of their professional artistic journeys. Hemant Joshi’s transition from award-winning student to jury member stands as a reminder that today’s learners often become tomorrow’s mentors—keeping the artistic tradition alive and evolving.
