Kabul, July 20: At least 20 people have died and around 80 others have been injured due to sudden flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall in the Nuristan province of eastern Afghanistan on Monday. Over 100 individuals are still reported missing.
Yusuf Hamad, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, shared the news on the social media platform ‘X’, indicating significant loss of life and property in the province.
Officials from the provincial disaster management department have reached the affected areas to conduct rescue and relief operations. Teams are actively working to recover bodies, rescue the injured, and search for missing persons.
Hamad stated that official figures regarding the loss of life and property will be released after initial assessments are completed.
In a separate statement, Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the need to expedite relief and rescue efforts.
Local authorities reported that the capital of Nuristan, Parun, has been the hardest hit, with numerous homes and infrastructure severely damaged by the floods.
Earlier, on June 9, Afghan officials reported that at least 301 people had died and 385 were injured due to seasonal flash floods and other natural disasters across the country in the past ten weeks.
According to Hamad, these disasters have caused widespread devastation, severely impacting livelihoods and infrastructure. He noted that approximately 2,000 homes have been completely destroyed, while 7,187 homes have suffered partial damage. Around 580 kilometers of roads have been washed away, and more than 30,300 acres of agricultural land and crops have been submerged or destroyed.
Additionally, a total of 18,812 families across the country have been affected by these disasters.
