Cyclone Arnab Approaches: Heavy Rain Alert for Seven States
Mumbai, October 25: A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and is expected to transform into Cyclone Arnab by the morning of October 27. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall across several states, including Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Kerala.
The system is projected to move northwestward and could reach the western-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26, likely developing into a severe cyclonic storm by October 27. The cyclone is anticipated to make landfall near Visakhapatnam on October 28.
According to the IMD, districts in West Bengal, such as South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Bankura, and Jhargram, may experience heavy rainfall between October 28 and 30. Kolkata is also expected to witness significant rainfall during this period.
The storm is predicted to have wind speeds ranging from 115 to 125 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 140 kilometers per hour. Currently, wind speeds in the Bay of Bengal are around 60 kilometers per hour.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors as heavy winds and rain could uproot trees and cause other hazards. The IMD has also warned that rainfall may begin in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from October 25, with Odisha likely to see rain starting on October 26.
