Leh, September 28 (Udaipur Kiran News) – The curfew in violence-hit Leh city remained in force for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday, as authorities continued to monitor the situation following recent unrest. Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta is scheduled to hold a security review meeting today to decide on possible relaxation of restrictions.

The curfew was imposed on Wednesday evening after widespread protests erupted during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) to press demands for statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule.
On Saturday, authorities granted four hours of phased relaxation, which remained peaceful.
The violence on Wednesday left four people dead and several injured, while over 50 individuals were detained for their alleged involvement in rioting. Notably, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) and shifted to Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan.
Officials confirmed that the situation on Sunday remained largely calm, with no fresh incidents reported. The Lieutenant Governor will chair a meeting at Raj Bhavan later today to review the situation and consider further easing of restrictions.
Mobile internet services remain suspended, and Section 144 — prohibiting gatherings of five or more persons — continues to be enforced in Leh and other key areas including Kargil. Heavy deployment of police, CRPF, and ITBP personnel remains in place, with riot-control gear and flag marches being conducted to maintain order.
The FIR filed after the violence names several individuals, including two Congress councillors, Smanla Dorje Nurbo and Futsog Stanzin Tsepac, who surrendered before a local court on Saturday. They, along with Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) Vice-President Savin Rigzin and village head Rigzin Dorje, have been placed in police custody.
According to Ladakh Bar Association President Mohammad Shafi Lassu, other accused — including members of the Leh Apex Body, LBA youth wing, and student leaders — have been sent to judicial custody.
The Bar Association has taken up all cases pro bono and is demanding the release of all arrested individuals, asserting that the charges are being legally contested under various sections.
