Fatorda (Goa), October 23 (Udaipur Kiran): Indian midfielder Bryson Fernandes created history on Wednesday by becoming the first Indian footballer to score in the AFC Champions League 2. However, despite his remarkable goal, FC Goa suffered a 1-2 defeat against Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.

Within the first 30 minutes, Al-Nassr established a 2-0 lead through goals from Angelo Gabriel and Haroune. In the 41st minute, Bryson Fernandes made a brilliant move and scored to bring Goa back into the contest. FC Goa displayed strong resilience in the second half but failed to find the equaliser.
Goa’s Strategy and Struggle
FC Goa adopted a counter-attack approach, but their players could not capitalise effectively after gaining ball possession. Apart from Fernandes, no other player could carry the ball forward to create real threats. Muhammad Nemil tried to make an impact but was often outmuscled in the midfield.
Borja Herrera and Dejan Drazic also failed to trouble the opposition defence, leaving Goa’s attacking plans ineffective.
Al-Nassr’s Early Control
Coach Jorge Jesus’s Al-Nassr, who had won nine of their last ten matches, started strongly once again. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Saudi side eased their pressure slightly, allowing Goa to pull one back through Fernandes’s goal.
In the second half, Al-Nassr did not press aggressively but still managed to secure all three points comfortably.
Underwhelming Show from Foreign Players
FC Goa’s foreign contingent disappointed on the night. Javier Siverio was forced off due to injury in the 24th minute. Though Dejan Drazic assisted Fernandes’s goal, he failed to make a major impact otherwise. David Timor and Pol Moreno struggled in midfield and defence respectively, while Borja Herrera delivered a few decent corners but faltered in defensive duties.
Ronaldo’s Absence
Fans were eagerly waiting to see Cristiano Ronaldo in action, but the star forward was rested for the match. Reports suggest he was kept out to avoid injury risks due to the poor pitch conditions at the stadium.
Final Score:
FC Goa 1 – 2 Al-Nassr
(Goal for FC Goa: Bryson Fernandes 41’)
