BJP Welcomes Election Commissions Decision for Re-Polling in Bengal

Kolkata, May 2: The decision of the Election Commission to conduct re-polling at 15 polling stations in the Magrahat West and Diamond Harbour assembly constituencies of South 24 Parganas district has been welcomed by BJP candidates. This decision comes after complaints of malfunctioning EVM buttons and tampering were reported in the Falta assembly constituency.

BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari, contesting from Bhawanipur and Nandigram, expressed his approval of the re-polling decision, stating, “The decision for re-polling in Magrahat West is commendable, but more booths in Diamond Harbour should also undergo re-polling.” He emphasized that only four booths are set for re-polling and called for re-voting across the entire Falta area or at least 60 booths.

When questioned about the absence of a re-polling order for the Falta assembly constituency, Adhikari noted, “The Election Commission must have its reasons for the decision, which involves processes like CCTV footage, observer reports, and presiding officer reports.” He affirmed his trust in the Election Commission, stating, “We do not speak like Mamata Banerjee.”

Arjun Singh, BJP candidate from Noapara, also endorsed the re-polling decision, asserting, “If there was any malfunction in the EVMs and even one person could not cast their vote, it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to arrange for re-polling.”

However, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh raised objections to the re-polling decision, accusing the BJP of forcing the demand. He claimed, “What they are trying to do is not right. The voting was peaceful, and they are demanding re-polling forcefully.” Ghosh asserted that the Trinamool Congress would win by a large margin at the booths where re-polling is scheduled.

The re-polling will take place on Saturday at 15 polling stations, with 11 in Magrahat West and four in Diamond Harbour, following the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections held on April 29.
