Bengaluru, July 29: The ongoing Cauvery water sharing dispute has drawn sharp criticism from BJP leader R. Ashoka towards the Congress government in Karnataka. Speaking to reporters in Davangere, Ashoka accused the state government of failing to protect Karnataka’s interests despite paying lawyers ₹300 crore in fees, which led to an order directing the release of 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.
Ashoka stated that the order from the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) was a direct result of the government’s negligence and inadequate preparation for the legal case. He emphasized that the government’s failure regarding the Cauvery water-sharing issue is evident, attributing the decision to release water to Tamil Nadu to the government’s carelessness.
He expressed concern about the impact of this order on Karnataka’s drinking water security, particularly for Bengaluru and other regions dependent on the Cauvery River. Ashoka warned that the future of drinking water for millions, including residents of Bengaluru, is at risk. He urged the government to strengthen its legal battle and protect Karnataka’s rights, suggesting that a change in the legal team may be necessary.
Additionally, Ashoka accused the Congress government of prioritizing political activities over public welfare, questioning the government’s spending priorities. He claimed that while the government is willing to spend heavily on political activities and publicity, it hesitates to assist farmers affected by drought and crop loss.
He lamented that whenever relief for drought-stricken farmers is discussed, the government claims it lacks funds. Ashoka’s comments come amid a political uproar over the Cauvery water dispute, as the Karnataka government has decided to challenge the CWRC’s order before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), citing a significant lack of rainfall and insufficient water reserves in reservoirs.
