Assam Assembly Elections Scheduled for April 9

New Delhi, March 15: The Election Commission has announced the dates for assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar revealed the election schedule during a press conference, covering West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Voting for Assam’s 126 assembly seats will take place in a single phase on April 9, with results to be declared on May 4.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar stated that the gazette notification will be issued on March 16. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, followed by scrutiny of nominations on March 24. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26. Voting is scheduled for April 9, and counting will occur on May 4. The election process must be completed before May 6.

The Commission has made extensive preparations regarding security. According to the Commission, approximately 25 million voters in Assam are expected to participate in the elections.

The CEC mentioned that the Commission has visited all electoral states in recent days to review preparations and engage with political parties, officials, and voters. The team assessed the election readiness in all states and gathered suggestions from political parties. Detailed discussions were also held with enforcement agency officials, district election officers, police officials, state election officers, and police directors general.

He noted that the Commission has communicated with youth and first-time voters. Additionally, the work of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), who play a crucial role in facilitating the election process, was appreciated. Special arrangements will be made during the elections, including the establishment of women-operated polling stations in several locations, managed entirely by female staff.

The Election Commission assures that comprehensive measures have been implemented to ensure fair, transparent, and secure elections across all states, allowing every voter to exercise their franchise without fear or pressure.
