New Delhi, March 15: Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30. This season, Chennai has opted for a youthful approach, acquiring players like Prashant Kishor and Kartik Sharma for a hefty sum of ₹14.20 crores. Additionally, they have traded for explosive batsman Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals.
Chennai’s batting lineup appears strong this year, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad being supported by the dynamic Sanju Samson. Samson had an outstanding T20 World Cup 2026, scoring 321 runs in just five matches and earning the Player of the Tournament title.
Ayush Mhatre also made a significant impact with his batting last season. The team boasts solid Indian batsmen like Urvil Patel, Sarfaraz Khan, and Kartik Sharma. Urvil had some impressive innings in IPL 2025, while Dewald Brevis is expected to wreak havoc on any bowling attack in the middle order. It will be interesting to see where MS Dhoni bats in IPL 2026.
Chennai Super Kings also have quality all-rounders in Prashant Kishor, Jamie Overton, and Shivam Dube. Shivam’s recent form has been exceptional, which could benefit the team. Prashant is known for his contributions with both bat and ball. However, the pace attack appears somewhat weak. Matt Henry’s T20 record is not particularly impressive, and Nathan Ellis lacks experience. The team has Indian pacers like Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, and Gurjapneet Singh. Khaleel took 15 wickets in 14 matches last season, but his economy rate was 9.58.
Despite the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, Chennai’s spin department looks robust for IPL 2026, featuring quality spinners like Noor Ahmad, Shreyas Gopal, Akil Hussain, and Rahul Chahar. On the MA Chidambaram pitch, Noor and Akil could pose significant challenges for batsmen. After finishing at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2025, Chennai will be eager to make a strong comeback this season.
