New Delhi, February 14 (Udaipur Kiran): The government is preparing to introduce major changes in the design of the Aadhaar Card to prevent misuse of personal details. Reports indicate that the updated Aadhaar card may display only the card holder’s photograph and a QR code.
The move comes after the launch of the new Aadhaar app by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The proposed change aims to curb misuse of Aadhaar photocopies, which currently contain sensitive personal information.
Only Photo and QR Code on Card
As per reports, the redesigned physical Aadhaar card will carry just the holder’s photograph and a QR code. Details such as Aadhaar number, name, address and date of birth may not be printed on the card.
The proposal is reportedly under preparation since last year. The objective is to reduce the risk of data theft and unauthorised use of Aadhaar copies submitted for various services.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, during an online conference, confirmed that new rules are being framed to prevent misuse of Aadhaar through photocopies.
New Aadhaar App with Enhanced Features
UIDAI has recently launched the full version of its new Aadhaar app. The app allows users to access several services that earlier required visiting an Aadhaar centre.
Through the app, users can update their mobile number, address and other details. It also enables card holders to lock and unlock their Aadhaar biometrics with a single click.
After logging into the app, users can view their photograph along with a QR code, while other personal details remain hidden. Without login access, the information is not visible.
Why the Change is Being Considered
Aadhaar has become an essential document for Indian residents. It is required for opening bank accounts, purchasing SIM cards, buying property, availing loans and accessing government schemes.
Currently, individuals often submit photocopies of their Aadhaar card for such services. These copies contain sensitive details that may be misused.
Under the proposed system, verification for banking, SIM issuance and government schemes can be done by scanning the QR code on the card. This QR-based verification is expected to enhance privacy and reduce the chances of misuse.
