Liverpool Defeats Chelsea in Carabao Cup Penalty Shootout
Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Carabao Cup.

LIVERPOOL, Oct 29: Liverpool edged past Chelsea in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in their Carabao Cup fourth round match at Anfield. Chelsea suffered their fifth consecutive penalty loss against Liverpool.
Both teams exchanged penalties in a tightly contested match. Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers opened the scoring with a penalty just before half-time after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo. Liverpool equalized quickly through Cody Gakpo’s penalty after Wesley Fofana’s handball.
The match progressed to penalties after a goalless second half. Joe Gomez scored the first penalty for Liverpool, while Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana misfired, sending his shot over the bar and sealing Liverpool’s victory.
Giorgi Mamardashvili, Chelsea’s goalkeeper, saved attempts from Emegha and Gravenberch during the shootout, but it wasn’t enough to prevent another knockout-stage defeat. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expressed disappointment, saying, “Every time you reach the penalties, someone will feel it is harsh to go out of the competition.” He noted improvements in his team compared to their previous match against Tottenham.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola commended his players for their efforts, stating, “We were struggling at home in the league but now we go against Arsenal on Sunday.” The victory means Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
