New Delhi: Many people travel to hills and high-altitude areas during holidays, but often face stomach issues while traveling at such heights. The main reason behind this is hypoxia, which means a lack of oxygen.
At high altitudes, the vagus nerve does not function properly, digestion slows down, gas forms, and the stomach feels bloated. Cold weather further slows digestion. Travel also affects the gut microbiome, the balance of bacteria in the digestive system. Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija has shared important advice for those traveling to high altitudes.
The nutritionist explains that it is not just bloating, but the entire digestive system becomes irregular due to hypoxia. Oxygen deficiency affects the nervous system, which in turn impacts digestion.
She refers to a study showing that hypoxia slows gastrointestinal motility, meaning the movement of the intestines, resulting in digestive changes.
As altitude increases, the vagus nerve’s functioning declines because of hypoxia. Since this nerve controls digestion, its impaired function slows intestinal motility, reduces enzyme release, and delays stomach emptying. This leads to increased gas, bloating, and discomfort. Additionally, cold weather at high altitudes activates the sympathetic nervous system, triggering the ‘fight or flight’ mode. This mode conserves the body’s energy by further slowing digestion.
The expert clarifies that this is not just an issue of air pressure but involves the entire nervous system shifting into energy conservation mode. Travel also impacts the gut microbiome, and this effect is intensified at high altitudes, making digestive problems more severe.
According to the nutritionist, just as one carefully packs a suitcase before traveling, the stomach should also be prepared. Before starting the journey, eat light meals, stay hydrated, and choose foods and snacks that support digestion.
