WhatsApp Begins Testing 60-Second Status Updates, QR Code Scanner Shortcut for UPI Payments

WhatsApp is testing two new features that will make it easier to share long videos as status updates and speed up peer-to-peer (P2P) payments via UPI. These new features were discovered by WABetaInfo Feature Tracker in the current beta version of WhatsApp for Android. Once these features are available to all users on the Tableau channel, users will be able to share 60-second videos about their status and quickly scan QR codes to send money to vendors and other users.

A feature tracker has discovered the ability to upload videos up to 60 seconds long in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.24.7.6. The latest beta version of this program is available to users who have registered to receive the beta version of the program. . This effectively doubles support for everything from video uploads to status updates from the existing 30-second limit. However, WABetaInfo notes that viewers will also need to install the latest beta version to access these long-awaited updates.

The beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.24.7.3 was released to beta testers just before the latest update and introduced another feature that allows users to make UPI payments with just a few taps. Instead of tapping the three-dot menu and selecting Payments > Scan QR Code Payment, beta testers can tap the corresponding QR Code Scanner shortcut at the top of the main chat menu. This is the search shortcut, located to the left of the camera and in the top right corner of the screen.

The messaging service recently started blocking the ability to take screenshots of users’ profile photos in the latest version of its app for Android smartphones. Pixel phones take completely black screenshots, while other Android phones refuse to take screenshots, citing device security policies.

The current beta version of WhatsApp for Android adds the ability to pin multiple chats to the top of the screen. This gives users instant access to more conversations at the top of the chat list without having to search. We expect the new QR code scanners, longer status updates, and improved chat pinning to be available to all users on stable channels via an app update in the coming weeks and months.
