Volvo Cars to Integrate Google Gemini AI for More Natural Voice Interactions

In a major leap forward for in-car voice technology, Volvo Cars has announced that it will integrate Google’s Gemini AI into its vehicle lineup, replacing the existing Google Assistant system. The upgrade will roll out later this year for all Volvo vehicles equipped with Android Automotive, positioning Volvo at the forefront of Google’s automotive ambitions.

Gemini to Replace Google Assistant in Volvo Vehicles

Gemini, Google’s new-generation artificial intelligence assistant, is designed to offer a more human-like, conversational experience. It will supersede the current Google Assistant interface in Volvo cars and significantly enhance how drivers interact with their vehicles.

Already available on Android smartphones, Gemini allows users to engage in more fluid and context-aware voice commands, enabling tasks such as finding a nearby restaurant, pulling information from the owner’s manual, or planning complex travel itineraries—all without taking hands off the wheel.

Volvo says this deeper integration of AI is part of a broader commitment to driver safety and digital wellbeing. “Reducing your cognitive load so that you can stay focused on driving” is central to Volvo’s vision for user-friendly, distraction-free automotive technology.

A Full AI Co-Pilot for the Road

Unlike traditional voice assistants, Gemini is capable of much more than basic tasks. It can compose and translate messages, retrieve information, look up recipes, and even manage a shopping list, all while the car is in motion. The goal is to provide a seamless in-car experience that mirrors the sophistication of smartphones and smart home devices.

Volvo believes this shift will transform how drivers interact with their cars, bringing a level of intelligence and personalization that was previously unavailable in mainstream automotive technology.

Volvo to Lead Google’s Automotive Software Rollout

This move also cements Volvo’s role as Google’s lead development partner for Android Automotive OS. As part of this collaboration, new features and software upgrades—including the upcoming jump from Android 13 to Android 15—will debut first in Volvo vehicles before being rolled out to other automakers.

Android 15, which was recently released for mobile devices, is expected to make its way to Volvo cars later this year, giving Volvo owners early access to next-gen features and improvements.

Speaking to Reuters, Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s Global Head of Software, said, “We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this. With our expanding partnership, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”

Driving Into the Future with AI

The integration of Google Gemini AI in Volvo vehicles underscores a growing trend where automakers are becoming software innovators, offering increasingly sophisticated digital experiences to consumers. With this partnership, Volvo is not only enhancing its own vehicle ecosystem but also setting a benchmark for AI-powered, connected mobility.
