Chennai, May 6: Following the results of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, C. Joseph Vijay formally claimed to form the government in the state on Wednesday. His party, the Tamilaga Vetria Katchi (TVK), emerged as the largest party in the 234-member assembly.
Vijay arrived at the Lok Bhavan to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar amidst unprecedented political enthusiasm and intense speculation regarding the formation of the next government.
Accompanying Vijay were senior leaders of TVK, including ‘Bussi’ Anand, K.A. Sengottaiyan, Adhav Arjun, and Arun Raj.
According to sources, Vijay submitted a formal letter to Governor Arlekar requesting permission to form the government and assured him that the party would secure its majority in the assembly within the stipulated time.
This meeting is considered the first significant constitutional step towards forming a new government in Tamil Nadu under Vijay’s leadership.
TVK made a remarkable electoral debut by winning 108 seats in the recently concluded assembly elections, becoming the largest party in the state. However, the party fell short of the 118 seats required to form the government independently.
After the election results, Vijay engaged with newly elected legislators and senior party leaders. Subsequently, TVK’s legislators unanimously elected him as the leader of the legislative party, paving the way for him to present his claim to the governor.
Meanwhile, significant political activity continues in Chennai, with several parties exploring their options in the post-election scenario. The Congress has already extended conditional support to TVK, while left parties and smaller regional organizations are expected to hold internal discussions before making a final decision on supporting Vijay’s leadership.
The ruling DMK, which faced a significant setback in the elections, has also initiated internal discussions after losing power following one term. Political analysts believe that the coming days will be crucial in determining the shape and stability of the next government in Tamil Nadu.
