New Delhi, May 25 – Heavy overnight thunderstorms and powerful winds sweeping through the Delhi-NCR region late Saturday caused widespread disruption to flight operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, with several flights delayed and others cancelled. In response, airport authorities issued a passenger advisory on Sunday morning, asking travelers to stay updated on their flight status and remain in contact with their respective airlines.
Advisory to Passengers Amid Weather Disruptions
According to the advisory released by Delhi Airport, flight operations were temporarily impacted due to adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain, strong winds, and congestion on the airside.
“Some flights have been affected due to the inclement weather on Saturday night. Passengers are advised to regularly check their flight status and stay in touch with airline staff for updates. Our ground teams are actively working to ensure a smooth and safe experience,” the advisory stated.
Low Visibility and Wet Runways Trigger Delays
Reports from Flightradar24.com and media outlets like HT and PTI confirmed that multiple flights were delayed, with several also cancelled due to low visibility and wet runway conditions. The storm created temporary air traffic congestion, further compounding delays.
PTI reported that outgoing flights experienced an average delay of over 30 minutes early Sunday morning.
Indigo Airlines Confirms Temporary Disruptions
In a statement posted on social media platform X at 3:59 AM, IndiGo Airlines confirmed operational disruptions at Delhi Airport, citing “adverse weather conditions”. By 5:54 AM, the airline shared an update indicating that flight operations had resumed as skies began to clear.
Winds Touch 60 km/h, Temperature Dips
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), winds gusting up to 60 km/h swept through Delhi early Sunday, bringing temperatures down to 21.2°C. The weather event followed a Red Alert issued by IMD on Saturday, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain for the Delhi-NCR region.
The impact was visible across the city, with waterlogging in several areas, including major roadways near the airport, adding to the travel woes of early morning passengers.
