Guwahati, June 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of thunderstorms and lightning in various districts of Assam over the next seven days. Officials reported that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several areas.
According to the regional meteorological centre in Guwahati, adverse weather conditions are likely to persist in the western, central, and southern parts of the state from June 10 to June 16.
The IMD has warned that districts including Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, and Sribhum are likely to experience thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rainfall on different days during the forecast period.
In western Assam, heavy rainfall is anticipated in districts like Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Baksa, particularly between June 11 and June 13. Similar conditions are expected in parts of central Assam, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in some areas.
The weather department has also predicted thunderstorms with lightning in most districts of the Brahmaputra Valley. While some districts may not receive warnings for short periods, widespread rainfall events are expected to continue throughout the week.
In upper Assam, districts such as Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat, Majuli, and Dibrugarh are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, along with the possibility of very heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.
Southern Assam districts, including Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhum, are also expected to see continuous rainfall and thunderstorms. Warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall have been issued for some locations in Hailakandi and Sribhum for several days.
The Climate Change Department has advised residents, especially those living in sensitive and low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow official weather updates. The warnings will be valid from 8:30 AM on the scheduled day until 8:30 AM the following day.
