Shubman Gill Misses T20 World Cup Squad, Kirmani Comments on Form Slump

Bengaluru: Shubman Gill, the captain of India’s Test and ODI teams, has been left out of the squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. Former Indian cricketer Syed Kirmani expressed that every player goes through ups and downs, but ignoring a player during tough times is not advisable.

Syed Kirmani said, “Competition in our country is very tough, and that is a good thing. There is an immediate replacement available for every role, whether it is an all-rounder, bowler, spinner, batsman, or captain. The team has two or three potential captains, including Suryakumar Yadav. However, Shubman Gill was not considered, despite having been made captain of the Test and ODI teams. He was in excellent form during the 2024-25 England tour, setting records as captain and opener. But currently, due to poor form, he has not been selected.”

He added, “Every player experiences good and bad days. Bad days and poor form happen to everyone, no matter how great they are. But when a player is out of form, ignoring them is not the solution. It is possible that Shubman Gill has some personal reasons as well, which may have influenced the decision to exclude him from the team.”

The former cricketer further stated, “There should be clarity when a player is not selected or dropped. The selection committee deserves congratulations for their excellent work in choosing the teams for the World Cup and the series against New Zealand.”

The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 includes: Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (Vice-Captain), Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper), Sanju Samson (Wicketkeeper), Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar.
