Geneva, May 20: Casper Ruud made a confident start at the Geneva Open on Tuesday, defeating Jenson Brooksby in straight sets to secure his place in the second round of the tournament. The world number 17 took just 92 minutes to win with scores of 6-3, 7-5, showcasing his heavy topspin and baseline control throughout the match.
This latest victory comes during a busy and successful clay-court season for Ruud, who recently reached a major final in Rome, where he was defeated by world number one Jannik Sinner. Sinner has recently become only the second player in history to complete the ‘Career Golden Masters.’
Despite a packed schedule, Ruud appeared physically refreshed and strategically sharp in Geneva. He hit 21 winners while limiting his unforced errors to just 12, maintaining control during crucial moments of the match.
Brooksby, ranked 60th, struggled to find his rhythm on clay, marking his fifth consecutive loss on this surface this season. The slow conditions have exposed weaknesses in his defensive game, although he had a strong start to the year on hard courts, reaching the quarterfinals in February.
Ruud has an impressive record in Geneva, having won this ATP 250 tournament three times before. He will face either Adrian Mannarino or Rafael Collignon in the next round as he aims to continue his strong clay-court performance.
On the third day, Alexei Popyrin secured a hard-fought victory against French qualifier Clément Tabur, winning 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 6-4, and setting up a second-round clash with top seed Taylor Fritz. Fritz is returning to competition for the first time since March in Miami, and Popyrin’s strong performance will test him immediately.
Eighth seed Jaume Munar also advanced smoothly, defeating American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy 6-0, 6-3 in just 75 minutes. The Spanish player will face Argentina’s Francisco Comesana in the next round as the tournament progresses.
