BUCHAREST, April 1, 2025 — Romanian tennis hopeful Filip Cristian Jianu claimed a confident straight-sets victory in the first round of the Tiriac Open, defeating American Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 6-4 on Monday at the National Tennis Centre in Bucharest.

The 23-year-old wildcard entrant, ranked No. 241 in the ATP rankings, outplayed world No. 108 Basavareddy in 93 minutes, capitalizing on his opponent’s unforced errors despite the American hitting more winners (22 to Jianu’s 13). Basavareddy’s 16 unforced errors, compared to Jianu’s 9, proved costly in the tightly contested match.
First ATP Main Draw Win and Progress to Round of 16
With this victory, Jianu not only notched his first ATP main draw win at the Tiriac Open, but also earned €10,460 (approx. $11,317 USD) in prize money and 25 ATP ranking points. He will face either Valentin Vacherot or Damir Džumhur in the Round of 16.
“This win means a lot to me, especially playing at home in front of Romanian fans,” Jianu said post-match. “I stayed composed and took my chances.”
Mixed Fortunes for Romanian Players
In another first-round match, fellow Romanian Luca Preda exited the tournament after falling 6-2, 6-3 to Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot. Despite the early loss, Preda earned €3,200 ($3,462 USD) and 7 ATP points.
The Tiriac Open, an ATP 250 clay-court tournament, runs from March 31 to April 6 and marks the return of top-tier men’s tennis to Romania’s capital.
