Mumbai, August 15: Senior advocate and former Rajya Sabha MP Majid Memon has dismissed the statement made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a political joke. He emphasized that such remarks should not be taken seriously. Memon condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and demanded an apology from the Maharashtra Home Minister on behalf of Punjab.
Regarding Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Meloni, Memon stated, “This is a political joke, akin to cartoons, where jokes or jibes are exchanged. Rahul Gandhi did the same. It’s a political joke that should not be taken seriously.”
On the BJP’s response to the matter, he remarked, “BJP leaders have made similar statements. Accusations and counter-accusations are not new. We say something, they respond. I don’t think it holds any significance, nor do I believe it should be presented as news.”
Memon also expressed concern over the attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal at a gurdwara, stating, “It is absolutely wrong to attack any politician in such a manner. We must condemn it. It is unfortunate that a senior leader from Punjab was not provided adequate security in Maharashtra. Our Chief Minister is also questioning how such an incident occurred and why security was not provided.”
He further described the incident as unfortunate and called for accountability from the state’s Home Minister, insisting that an apology should be made to Punjab.
On the issue of Vande Mataram, he mentioned that it is a sensitive matter that has been ongoing for nearly 50 years. He stated, “There is nothing wrong with Vande Mataram; it is not against any religion and is meant to praise the country. It should be embraced rather than imposed directly, which is a mistake by the government.”
Commenting on student protests in Jharkhand, he noted that demonstrations are occurring nationwide. He highlighted the significant damage to the future of the youth due to paper leaks, asserting that merely resigning the education minister will not resolve the issue.
