Pune Building Collapse: Army Joins Rescue Operations Amid Fears of Trapped Individuals

Pune, July 9: A massive rescue operation is underway in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area of Pune, Maharashtra, following the collapse of an under-construction building on Wednesday. The Indian Army has joined the rescue efforts, deploying a joint task force to the site.

According to reports, the Southern Command has sent a team that includes engineering experts, medical officers, and rescue personnel. The Army’s engineering task force is collaborating with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, fire department, and other agencies in the rescue operations.

The incident occurred at the Moshi garbage depot site, where construction was ongoing. Initial information suggests that around 23 individuals may be trapped under the debris. So far, 12 people have been rescued, with five escaping on their own and seven being rescued by teams. One individual is reported to be seriously injured and has been hospitalized for treatment.

Chaos ensued in the area following the incident, prompting local police, fire department, NDRF, and other rescue agencies to respond swiftly. The involvement of the Army’s special team is expected to enhance the pace of the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has instructed additional Chief Secretary of the Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Vinita Ved Singhal, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijaykumar Suryavanshi, and Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Chaubey to expedite the rescue efforts.

Officials have been directed to ensure the safe extraction of those trapped and to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured. The Army’s participation in the rescue operation was initiated following the Deputy Chief Minister’s directives.

It is noteworthy that Maharashtra has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), various rain-related incidents have resulted in 62 fatalities in the state since June 1.
