Jind, December 8: Professor Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, Chairperson of Planning and Control at the Pacific University Group, has been re-elected as the Chairperson of the UNESCO-run Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) for the next two years, 2025-2026.

Unanimous Re-Election by Global Representatives

During the Governing Board meeting held on December 5-6, representatives from countries including the United States, Japan, France, Indonesia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and others unanimously supported Professor Sharma’s re-election. The MGIEP, a Category 1 Institute of UNESCO, focuses on peacebuilding, sustainability, and global citizenship education across the Asia-Pacific region.

Agenda and Leadership

Chairing the Governing Board meeting, Professor Sharma outlined the institute’s strategic plan and emphasized the importance of coordination with UNESCO headquarters. The meeting also approved the institute’s annual budget and operational framework for the upcoming year.

Professor Sharma highlighted the need for enhanced focus on compassion, biodiversity, global citizenship, and sustainable development through education and research initiatives. Task allocations for office-bearers were finalized to ensure effective implementation of the institute’s mission.

Impact and Achievements

In the past year, MGIEP has achieved remarkable milestones, including the training of over 230,000 learners in the Asia-Pacific region on topics related to sustainability, peacebuilding, and global citizenship education. The institute continues to lead efforts in promoting inclusive and equitable education aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
