NIA Takes Over Investigation of Crude Bombs in West Bengal

New Delhi, May 1: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the investigation into the recovery of crude bombs in West Bengal, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The agency registered a new First Information Report (RC-25/2026/NIA/DLI) on April 26, a day after receiving the order.

The case involves the recovery of 79 crude bombs and other incriminating materials by the Kolkata police on April 25, which were found stored in a location that posed a significant risk to public safety. The initial FIR (No. 62/2026) was filed at the Uttar Kashipur Police Station under the Bhangar division of Kolkata, citing violations of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.

State police discovered the bombs, which were round-shaped and tied with jute ropes, stored in an abandoned house near a burial ground in Majherhat village, South 24 Parganas district. The MHA has classified this case as a ‘scheduled offence’ under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, due to the serious implications for public safety and national security.

The MHA’s decision to transfer the case to the NIA was prompted by concerns over the potential for a wider conspiracy and the need to ensure thorough investigation into the illegal storage and handling of explosives, which could instill fear among citizens.

The NIA is now tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the matter to uncover any broader threats.
