Microsoft plans to offer voluntary exit packages to employees in India as part of a strategy to balance investments in artificial intelligence with financial efficiency. The announcement targets employees at experience levels of 70 or below, reportedly affecting about 27% of the total workforce.

Approximately 60,000 employees are eligible for the buyout, according to an unnamed source familiar with the matter. Microsoft has significantly increased spending on data centers to support the growing demand for AI services, forecasting over $50 billion in capital expenditures for the current quarter.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president, emphasized that the voluntary exit program reflects the company’s evolving approach to change, adding, “creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter.” This initiative follows an earlier voluntary retirement program with a participation rate exceeding 30%.

Employees have until early December to decide on the buyout, with those opting in expected to leave by December 31. Some teams in marketing, sales, and engineering may choose not to participate.

The company’s ongoing transformation aims to enhance its business model, particularly in charging clients based on actual AI usage. Microsoft continues to adapt to a competitive market while maintaining positive cash flow compared to some rivals.

An official announcement regarding the third quarter results is expected this Wednesday.
