New Delhi, May 1: Union Minister of State Nityanand Rai has sharply responded to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s allegations regarding the Kolkata strong room controversy. He suggested that this could be Mamata Banerjee’s last term as Chief Minister, which is why she is reportedly agitated and protesting outside the strong room.
Following the assembly elections in Bengal, Trinamool Congress leaders began a sit-in protest near the EVM strong room, citing concerns over tampering.
In a media interaction, Nityanand Rai stated that the people of West Bengal have expressed their trust in Prime Minister Modi’s work, while under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, the common public has faced violence, lawlessness, and crime. He accused the state government of allowing incidents of rape and violence to become its identity and claimed that the government is not cooperating on serious issues like border security, which affects national security.
Meanwhile, Union Minister BL Verma, speaking in Delhi, emphasized the crucial role of agents during the nomination process in elections, noting that the Election Commission makes all information public. He accused Mamata Banerjee of attempting to undermine democratic processes and interfering with the functioning of the Election Commission. Despite being the Chief Minister, she should adhere to the process as a candidate.
Verma also mentioned that if a representative is absent, it is their responsibility, and the entire process can be monitored through cameras. He hinted that Mamata Banerjee’s current term might be her last, as the prevailing circumstances are weakening her political standing.
In the meantime, Omar Abdullah from Jammu and Kashmir’s Pampore expressed his lack of faith in monitoring EVMs before elections but stressed the importance of ensuring security after the elections. He referenced the era of old ballot boxes, where monitoring was also conducted outside strong rooms. While Mamata Banerjee has the right to monitor, he criticized her for questioning the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Review (SIR), alleging that it could lead to changes in the voter list, posing a threat to democracy.
He warned that if the outcomes of this process prove to be accurate, it would be a matter of concern for the entire nation.
